Living along the Gulf Coast means hurricane season isn't a hypothetical — it's an annual reality for homes in Pensacola, Milton, Pace, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre. Heavy rain and storm surge put real stress on your plumbing system, and a little preparation now can prevent a major mess later.

1. Test Your Sump Pump Before the Storm

If your property has a sump pump, don't wait until the water is rising to find out if it works. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and confirm the pump activates and drains properly. If it's more than 7–10 years old or you're not sure when it was last serviced, have it checked.

2. Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Is

If a pipe breaks or floodwater backs up into your home during a storm, being able to shut off your main water supply quickly can prevent significant damage. Locate the valve now, make sure it turns freely, and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is.

3. Clear Gutters and Exterior Drains

Save a local, licensed plumber's number in your phone before storm season starts — not during the storm, when phone lines and internet access may be unreliable.

Once the weather clears, check for slow drains, unusual odors, or water stains that could indicate storm-related plumbing damage. If anything seems off, it's worth a professional inspection — problems caused by storm stress are not always visible right away.
